A Golden Advice

If I were asked to give what I consider the single most useful bit of advice for all humanity, it would be this: Expect trouble as an inevitable part of life, and when it comes, hold your head high. Look it squarely in the eye, and say, “I will be bigger than you. You cannot defeat me.

Must Qualities In International Managers

In today’s post I would like to discuss what qualities an International “Manager” should have!
We all know that the success of any business lay in the hands of its staff. Their enthusiasm and every extra effort they contribute with to improve their job is a bonus, companies need to reward and encourage its staff to it.
A manager in general holds great responsibilities upon its shoulders, in regards to the company, project, team, clients and not forgetting presenting a good and positive image about his/her country and culture.

Many business people argue that there should not be a difference between Managers at home and International Managers, and prefer to refer to it as a “Good Manager”.
However and regardless of what we call “Global Managers”, we all agree that Managers taking on new posts abroad and in foreign countries should have in addition to all the required qualities a Manager has at home, additional skills to help them increase their success chances.

Businesses need to be realistic when choosing the “Manager” to represents their side of teh Business. The wrong man in the wrong post can have a catastrophic effect on the business. And those who apply to an International Manager’s job need to be realistic about what the job needs and their own abilities to adapt their business mannerism, ideas and most likely their lifestyles in order to deliver the job that they were hired to do.

I’ve mentioned already that a business success is the results of its hard working staff. But allow me to recapitulate, if we say a company has the best team, with the best product in the world, supported by the largest company strategy but managed by a team leader with weak qualities then I could say confidently that this company or business will most certainly fail!!!
A good team needs a good manager. The two are parallel to each other and one cannot function effectively without the other. However, the bigger responsibility lay heavily on the shoulders of the Manager and the leader. It is him who represents his team, the product, the company and the customer all combined.

Business Qualities

Global Managers need to have exceptional communication skills and “good” is just not enough. The willingness to learn and adapt to new things is essential. Speaking the local language is also a great advantage, as it will certainly help the manager to understand more the system that this particular country runs its Business by and of course the ability to communicate better without the need for an interpreter and/or avoid any misunderstanding that might arise. The International Manager should be aware that he needs to expert in their business industry and be prepared to present himself as a well qualified and experienced leader.

Working for big companies has its disadvantages sometimes, as their general focus becomes internally orientated. That is why the International Manager will need to be completely aware not to lose customer focus and build their business around the changing needs of their customers.

Social Qualities

Global Managers need to be mature in their attitude, business and people awareness. They need to have the ability to communicate and participate effectively with people from different cultures. There will be no chance of success for a Manager who is not willing to adapt in new environments. Entertaining is of course another important aspect of the International Manager’s role. Diplomacy is a must in International business. Controlling your emotions, body language and tone of voice is a skill needs to be mastered before heading out to foreign countries. In previous posts I mentioned that any unintentional comment or gesture could have a negative effect on your business communications altogether.

An International post might be appealing for many staff. However the person who should be picked for such a role is the person who holds more or less all the qualities mentioned above and maybe more depending on the destination country and role that the Manager occupy and the nature of the business.
